What does the Foundation do?

The Northern Rivers Community Foundation is an independent philanthropic foundation, providing a sustainable way to benefit the community of the Northern Rivers region.

Community Foundations are the fastest growing form of philanthropy worldwide. They provide legally recognised ways for individuals and businesses to donate to their communities easily and effectively.

The Foundation gathers gifts from a wide range of donors. These gifts are pooled to form a capital base which is invested.

The Foundation grows the capital base by investing with professional fund managers. Only the income from the investments is used to fund community projects. In this way, a donor's gift continues to benefit the community year after year.

The Foundation gives the interest earned on investments back to the community through an annual grants program. This program supports social, environmental, and cultural needs in the Northern Rivers region. The Foundation ensures that funds are targeted effectively by drawing upon information from other community and government organisations.

The Foundation is run by a Board comprising dedicated locals who provide their time and expertise free of charge. A secretariat and honorary services from professional firms assist the Board.
